Limestone processing varies with the end product and targeted industry; however, the varieties also have some similarities, for example, all the processing methods require crushing and screening machine. The primary crushers are mainly selected on the basis of quality of rock and expected capacity. Through primary crushing, the bulk rock is normally reduced to a less than 15-cm diameter and transported via belt conveyor to the next processing stage.

In general, primary crushing is by a jaw or hammer crusher and secondary crushing is usually by impact or gyratory crusher. Like crushing, screening is one of the most critical steps in the processing cycle, particularly in the production of crushed stone. The selection from a wide variety of screen types and screen cloth depends on the requirements for the final products. Inclined vibratory equipment is the most widely used type.  The screens must be checked regularly for holes and tears because oversized material can quickly contaminate a significant volume of product. Stainless steel is frequently used for the screen cloth to reduce wear and increase the screen life.

Quarried stone usually has some moisture associated with it and as a consequence, fines may adhere to larger pieces of rock. Many crushed stone facilities include washing equipment in the production line to remove these fines and thus ensure gradation specifications and the removal of clay or soft shale. Limestone processing for industrial application may also require air classification and milling equipment, particularly when products are smaller than 10 mesh and must have a clean bottom cut (usually at 100 or 200 mesh). Air classifiers are easily adjusted and have the flexibility to make a wide range of products.

Programmable computers are also finding increased use in the processing of limestone. As stone crushing plants become larger and more complex, computer-controlled processing systems are an invaluable tool for achieving improved production efficiencies and quality. Dingli’s intelligent software has been widely adopted in various large-scale green production lines in China.
